Video Debate

Rules About Debate

1. Address arguments, not the person making them. Focus on critiquing ideas, evidence, and reasoning rather than attacking someone’s character, motives, or personal attributes. This keeps the discussion substantive and prevents it from devolving into personal conflict.

2. Steel-man rather than straw-man opposing positions. Present the strongest version of your opponent’s argument before responding to it. This demonstrates good faith engagement and ensures you’re actually addressing their real position rather than a distorted caricature.

3. Acknowledge valid points and concede when appropriate. Intellectual honesty requires recognizing when your opponent makes good points or when evidence contradicts your position. This builds credibility and shows you’re genuinely seeking truth rather than just trying to “win.”

4. Ask clarifying questions before assuming you understand. When something seems unclear or problematic, ask for clarification rather than immediately attacking what you think they meant. Misunderstandings are common and derail productive discussion.

5. Provide evidence and explain your reasoning. Support your claims with credible sources, bibliographies, articles, definitions and walk through your logical reasoning. This allows others to evaluate and engage with your actual argument rather than having to guess at your rationale.

6. Stay focused on the central issue. Avoid tangents, red herrings, and attempts to change the subject when challenged. Good debate requires sustained attention to the core disagreement until it’s resolved or you’ve identified exactly where you differ.

7. Maintain intellectual humility. Approach the discussion with genuine openness to being wrong and learning something new. The goal should be mutual understanding and truth-seeking, not proving your superiority or protecting your ego.

These principles create an environment where people can disagree productively and civilly and everyone can learn from the exchange.
